Dragonflies vs Damselflies

How do you tell the difference between Dragonflies and Damselflies?

Damselflies have long, slender bodies.

While Dragonflies are more robust.

The fore and hindwings of Damselflies are of similar shape and size.

While Dragonflies have broader wings with the hindwings larger and shaped differently from the forewings.

Most Damselflies close their wings above the body when settling

While Dragonflies keep their wings horizontal and out from the sides of the body while resting.

The major compound eyes of Damselflies are widely separated from each other on the head.

While in most Dragonflies the compound eyes join together in the middle of the head.

Larvae of Damselflies are slender and have three leaf-like gills on the back tip of the abdomen.

While Dragonfly larvae are more robust without abdominal tip gills.
